What is the custom membrane switch?

Custom means the alone, means the make the goods per the request, which means not the common components.

Foundation Industries (Short for FD) produce the membranes switches over 12 years, and all our membrane switches are custom for our customers. We design the membrane switches per the customer required shape, required dimensions, required colors, required schematic, required electric connects, We also suggest the customer with the reasonable structure that catches a good keys tactile feeling, suggest the customer with the reasonable circuitry design that catches our manufacture technique, suggest the customer with the correct components. The custom design parts do not need the customer to supply us with very details artwork/files, but FD will design the proof of the very details for customer approval. The FD will work together with the customer that makes a good custom design. In other words, the customer gives us the request that their design parts want to catch, we give them the professional technical support and design the proof for approval after they approved, we will produce the prototypes/samples for the final check, and the lastly mass production.

Most people think the custom parts should be with a very expensive tooling cost. Actually, at Foundation Industries, we design the tooling, but we don’t make the tooling by ourselves, our partner will produce the tooling for us, and we give you the same tooling cost which the partner ask for the cost. We will not add the extra profit with the tooling cost, and we think the tooling cost reasonable is a good start for every new project. The tooling cost you only need to pay one time for each part (Except the required changes. The changes should behave the tooling change cost), and we will keep and maintain the tooling till the parts stop the production forever. Also, the tooling is alone and just used for the alone parts, other’s customers can’t use such alone tooling.

What is silicone?

Silicone keypad:
As the name implies, the silica gel button is a product made from silica gel as raw materials. The silica gel button belongs to a product category of silica gel products. Silica gel button has excellent heat resistance, cold resistance, environmental resistance, electrical insulation, fatigue resistance, and other characteristics.

Main component editing:

Silica gel key diagram:

Membrane switch structure

Panel layer:
The panel layer is usually made of fine patterns and characters on the screen printing of colorless transparent sheets such as PET and PC less than 0.25mm. The main function of the panel layer is to mark and press buttons, so the selected materials must have high transparency, high ink adhesion, high elasticity, high toughness, and other characteristics.

The surface of the rubber:
The most important role of the surface adhesive is to connect the panel layer and the circuit layer closely to achieve the sealing and connection effect. The thickness of this layer is generally required to be between 0.05– 0.15mm, with high viscosity and anti-aging;In the production, the general choice of special film switch double-sided adhesive, some of the film switch requirements can be waterproof high temperature, so the adhesive must be used according to the needs of different properties of the material.

Control the upper and lower layers of the circuit:
This layer is made of polyester film (PET) with good performance as the carrier of switch circuit graphics, and conductive silver paste and conductive carbon paste are printed on it with a special process to make it conductive. The thickness is generally within 0.05–0.175MM, and the most common is 0.125MM PET.

Clip rubber:

It is located between the upper circuit and the lower circuit layer and plays the role of sealing and connection. Generally, PET double-sided adhesive tape is used with thickness ranging from 0.05 to 0.2MM. When choosing the material of this layer, the overall thickness, insulation, handle and sealing of the circuit key package should be fully considered.

On the back of the rubber:
Back adhesive is closely related to the film switch and what kind of material phase paste, the common double-sided adhesive, 3M adhesive, waterproof adhesive, etc.

What is membrane switch?

Membrane switch is an operating system that integrates key functions, indicator components, and instrument panels. It is composed of the panel, upper circuit, isolation layer, and lower circuit. Press the membrane switch, the contact of the upper circuit deforms downward and contacts the plate of the lower circuit. After the finger is released, the contact of the upper circuit bounces back, the circuit disconnects, and the circuit triggers a signal. Film switch structure rigorous, beautiful appearance, good sealing. It has the characteristics of damp proof and long service life. Widely used in electronic communication, electronic measurement instruments, industrial control, medical equipment, automotive industry, intelligent toys, household appliances, and other fields.

The structure of the membrane switch:

Flat type without touch: long service life, but without touch.
Film convex touch type: good touch, but relatively short service life.
Convex frame type without touch: beautiful appearance, strong three-dimensional sense, but without touch.
Convex border type: beautiful appearance, strong three-dimensional sense, and tactile.
Type:

  • The design is not appropriate, easy to have two phenomena, but the surface is damaged, the electrical performance also exists.
  • Type there are no two sections, and the structure layer is less, more economic, if the surface plate is damaged, the electrical performance will not exist.

Metal shrapnel type:

It is the most basic and commonly used structure.

Type: complicated structure, used for shrapnel more relatively close and don’t have the occasion of jump line. Shrapnel in an on-line way on conductive surface under the line up, the line needs to punch the structure when the conduction shrapnel center of four feet and not in the same plane, there are two cases at the same time, the shrapnel often leads the concave strong condition, time is long, the shell will appear not rebound phenomenon, is not recommended.

shrapnel is placed on the on-line circuit, only playing the role of tactile sensation. The upper circuit conducts electricity downward and the lower circuit conducts electricity upward. If there are two sections, it is not recommended to use it.

The shrapnel is placed in the lower line, and both the upper and lower lines are wired. The shrapnel not only ACTS as a sense of touch but also connects the upper and lower lines. For the occasions where shrapnel is denser and there is no jumper, it is necessary to pay attention to the line routing to avoid the four legs of shrapnel in the simple design of the structure, so as to ensure no short circuit.

Luminous shape: the bottom rubber mold must be opened.

The LED line is on the same floor as the lower line: the structure is simple, but if the selected LED lamp has a high height, the LED lamp will jack up the panel. At this point, the LED window on the panel should be convex, or the thickness of the adhesive layer should be thickened to make the thickness greater than that of the LED lamp.

The LED line and the line of different layers: the structure is complex, but the LED Windows doesn’t have to hit convex, but the top of the LED lights area must be hollowed out, prevent light could not through-hole LEDs.

Note: at this point the line goes line must be LED lights around the hole to avoid going.

For folding: this type can avoid jumper wire and don’t need to be more square holes can make the conductive surface can be down, the disadvantage of this structure in the folded easy line break.

Inside and outside the box waterproof type: The outer frame is a closed frame with no wiring. The inner frame has a protective effect to prevent water vapor from entering the casing from the outlet groove.

The LED backlighting is a good choice because of its energy-efficient properties. First, efficient low voltage power not like the EL that should be lit with high voltage. Second, minimal impact on the tactility of the membrane switch buttons. Backlighting solutions aren’t forever. However, the Side LEDs longer than other types of solutions.

Electroluminescence (EL):

EL membrane switch is made with a very thin layer between the overlay and the circuit providing uniformed illumination. It has some benefits: uniform, very thin and flexible.

Fiber Optics:

It is made of very thin plastic fiber. Fiber optics membrane switch could be used in numerous applications including the medical machine, Military, Industrial Controls, and Aerospace, etc.
